Family Support Team

Family Support

Our Family Support Team, funded by the National Lottery, assists families in need and crisis across social and economic contexts. Thus far we have worked with families to resolve issues relating to LAC / Social Services, e.g. mediation and report writing; Benefits & Housing; school exclusions; children’s behaviour management and / or development; parental empowerment and debt management. Our project also encompasses further groups, listed on this page.

Breakfast Bingo Coffee Morning

On Monday’s (10:00 – 12:00 noon) we run a Coffee Morning, where adults from the surrounding community can come to socialise and talk to our Family Support Workers, about any problems they are facing. This session has been a remarkable success; thus, we have recently included breakfast and bingo to the sessions agenda. We also hold frequent coffee & cake mornings to raise money for other charities, for example Macmillan; and also run regular employment workshops to assist parents in finding work.

Golden Stars Play Group

On Wednesday’s (10:00 – 11:30am) we run a stay and play group for 0-5 year olds called ‘Golden Stars’; this provides an opportunity for children to play and gain new skills, thus aiding their development. Equipment includes a soft play area; sensory room; mini gym and various arts & crafts activities, executed by our practitioners; a drink / snack is also provided for the children. These sessions also provide an opportunity for parents to socialise; and for our Family Support Workers to signpost and offer advice. Refreshments are available too (£1 voluntary donation per family for each session).

Homework Club

Also on Monday’s, (4:00 – 5:00pm) we run a Homework Club for 5-16 year olds, whereby we assist children and teenagers with any homework that they’ve been set from school. This includes work across subjects, projects and exam revision e.g. for GCSE’s; we have also assisted teenagers in the writing of personal statements for college. Children and teenagers attending the group have shown an increase in their self-esteem and holistic academic skills; they also receive 50 pence for every four weeks that they attend (to spend in the tuck shop). A ‘Star of the week’ is awarded for the individual that worked the hardest.
